Those pictures of the Last Airbender look great. I start to believe that Director M. Night Shyamalan could deliver a Last Airbender movie faithful to the original anime series.

uhh i know aang is like, 12 in the show, but did they really have to cast a kid with that much baby fat left? this kid looks freaking 3. and where the hell is zuko's scar? i can see a hint of a scar, but its no where near the right quality to compare to the TV show. the teaser trailer better look badass because i just lost alot of faith in this movie by seeing these pix.

Yea seriously, Zuko's scar is not exactly what I was hoping for.

And what up with the baby face Aang?

I am disappointed by the pictures. Where is Zuko's shave head & pony-tail trademark? What about his full armour clad? And where is his scar? And don't get me started on Aang! Aang is not white...please!

Honestly, I really thought the make up would be better. My expectations dropped quite alot you could say. But still, i will watch the movie. :)

As with many other adaptations of animated works, one of the most important elements seems to be the characters, more so than any other detail. The fans of the Dragonball series knew the movie was going to fail as soon as they saw the cast list. The fans of the Star Trek series were generally far more possitive when they saw who would be playing their beloved characters.
Now... Which senario seems more like Airbenders?
There is a large and active group of people, who have contacted and have the support of MANAA and other professional groups which support Asian actors and actresses, who feel that the casting of the Airbender movie was an incident of racism. The addition of Dev Patel to the cast, fixes nothing, as now the movie seems to be about an imperialistic dark skinned nation commiting genocide and other heinous crimes against smaller tribes of lighter skinned peoples.

my friends say this is going to be a cheap tacky movie. and whats with aang? he looks like a little kid. zuko's scar is pretty important in his past and its not even there! i don't think this movie is going to be good at all. aang needs to be more white too!

Err.. Nice pictures. If disappointing in their inaccuracies. I mean, sheesh, COSPLAYERS can get it amazingly right. There's no reason the professionals can't at least match that.

But, just FYI? Avatar is NOT an anime series. It's American made. That means 'cartoon' even if it emulates Japanese anime series at times.

Avatar is not anime. Avatar is an american cartoon created by americans. Some of the best animated american work since the golden age of cartoons (mid-1990s). They deserve the credit.

I agree with the second comment... the trailer better be friggin amazing, or... and I'm a HUGe avatar fan.

Ok, I like the stills, but the one critique I have to agree with the Zuko's scar and Aang's tattoo being too light to the point of barely noticable. Hopefully they will get a digital touchup. I want to see the rest of the cast and ensamble together.

As for Aang, I think this kid is spot on. In fact, I'm curious as to which Martial Arts School they found him at? That stance is too well-trained to be just some fresh young actor who got some studio training. This kid has the confidence built through martial arts training and shows that he means business. Hopefully he can also portray Aang's childish lighter side as well.

We should be seeing a Teaser Trailer soon.

On Zuko's scar-
Generally, you try to be more subtle in presenting such scarring in live action, because if its really pronounced, its going to look fake. The TV show is animated, and its difficult to sell such subtle detail when its drawn, unless you commit to representing that scarring in full detail all over the place, which will eat up a whole bunch of time.

On "Inaccuracies"-
Well, cosplayers can get it exactly right. And by exactly right, we mean, looking like the cartoon characters, with bright colors, little detail, and no need to find somebody who can actually move like the part requires them to move.

The important accuracy in these translations from animation to live action lies in getting characters and situations right, in passing on the themes and ideas of the work in concentrated, if not enhanced form.

As for Racism-
Avatar was kind of postmodern as far as race went. Race was hinted at, but not necessarily explicitly laid out. The realities of casting and getting people who can actually act, do martial arts, and whatever have to reach compromise with the notion of getting the right nationalities, if nationalities can be said to be relevant. After all, the Sun Warriors dwelled in an Aztec-looking civilization, the Swamp Waterbenders were patterned on both American rednecks and Malaysian junglefolk. Whose nationality are you obligated to honor?

I really thing that the cast is wrong; Dev should be Sokka and Jackson should be Zuko.

This movie looks AWESOME. And what are you guys even COMPLAINING about? Okay yeah, Katara and Sokka aren't dark skinned. Alright, I get it. But, how about this? WATCH THE DAMN MOVIE AND JUDGE IT THEN.

Isn't that easy?

P.S.

The Aang and Zuko look pretty rad, if you ask me :]

Moose the Younger said...

No Dev is right for Zuko and the stills show it. Jackson is too much the pretty boy to be Zuko.

ok well i saw the trailer last night and the teaser really builds up for a climax. aang is supposed to young so he looks great and that stance and his skills in the teaser cannot be from someone who just started. you all have to keep in mind this is going to be a 2 hour movie and not agabazillion episodes so this is going to be somewhat of an interpretation of the show. wait till you watch the movie til you really judge it.

I have to admit that the scale on which the fire nation navy is being depected is absolutely awsome. However, I agree with all the other critcism concerning Zuko. The scar is the everyday reminder of the past that drives him on. The mangnitude of the scar is to illustrate the brutality of the fire lord and the incredible emotional scarring Zuko has endured at the hands of his father. It cannot be minimized! As for Aang, he looks okay...but loose some of the baby fat. Aang was lithe and agile, like the wind. This kid would make a better earthbender with his stocky build. Dress him up like a girl and he could play Toph.

Zuko is casted all wrong it's going to totally ruin the movie for me and my kids. He may be good at martial arts but at least that can be taught good looks can't. He looks nothing like Zuko, he's not good looking, he's not edgy enough, and isn't Zuko suppossed to be Asian? What's wrong with the actor that played young Anikin Skywalker?

Its all good so far... Teaser too, although I was hoping for a peek at Katara, Sokka, and Suki in the Teaser.

First off, other than Aang being a little cheeky (which is realistically normal for the age), you cannot tell from the stills or the teaser if he's got Baby Fat. I'm sure he's a lot more fit under the robes than you think.

As for my earlier comment about his tattoo being light in the still, the teaser trailer more clearly showed it and was amazingly well drawn. I like the take on the tat instead of a solid arrow.

Cheers!

i agree with the scar comments, racism not so much. aang is good enough he's a kid who can kick some ass, cut him a break. My big complaint is that I have read that casting is over and there is not Toph! wtf?? seriously one of the main characters who kicks major ass and has comic timing, big mistake not adding her to the cast. the only way that's acceptable is if this is just an orign with a sequel to finish it up.

i just want to comment on Aang's tattoo... man! aang's tatoo is blue.. maybe they want it to be more realistic but this is a fantasy movie.. i dont know what Dir. Shyamalan plans on doing but he better be up to something good.

P.S. Honestly, the Sokka isn't that funny looking.. He's not that intelligent-looking too.. He must have a lot of guts to take that role.. And oh the people of the water tribe ARE NOT WHITE!

Aang looks like Vin Diesel.. LOL

In my opinion what will make or break this movie is if the battles and bending meet our expectations. However i agree, the scar is a huge symbol, same with the pony tale. Lets just hope the 12 year old kid can act and of course the ex vampire is funny..

Ahem, Toph isn't in it because this is BOOK 1!! xD Toph came in past the middle of Book 2. She will be in the second movie.

I still don't understand this whole racism thing. I swear ppl find racism in anything because they look for it.
It's like someone complaining that ppl don't like them because of there skin color when in truth, it's because they're an asshole.

Of course there is racism in the world (obviously a lot of Avatar fans are, tsk tsk) but some of them are ppl who look for it.

The bending better live up to expectations. And hopefully if they allow him to go into Avatar mode it doesn't look cheesy. But ofcourse since you know who is directing it aliens may play a part in the movie as well.

Personally I want to wait to see the movie until i start judging it. Also, i would much rather have the actors be able to represent the characters personality than look like them. However, there is one problem, I know it is early for the production stage, but i haven't heard any news about oppa or momo, and they are some of my favorite characters. It wouldn't be Avatar without them in it.

Katara and Sokka are suppose to be darker the Zuko! Jackson doesn't seem the goof ball type and Aang doesn't have baby fat. Zuko doesn't even look oriental! They didn't do a good job with the cast and they were not good on the fire nation armor. Also, aren't Sokka and Katara suppose to be oriental? They did a poor job if you ask me. I was looking forward to the film but I don't think I want to see it anymore. I am a very disappointed Avatar fan. Zuko was suppose to have a pony tail in the beginning and his left eye should look scared to, and Aang's tattoo needs to be more noticeable. Very, very disappointed ! Hope they stick to the script!:(

i agree that Dev looks more like Sokka and Jackson looks more like Zuko. I can imagine Dev making Sokka jokes and being silly! the pic of jackson here (as Sokka) has a look of arrogance...just like Zuko! only missing is the scar...

tsk tsk...very disappointed at their casting job for zuko, sokka and katara.

I like the trailer a lot, but i looked at aang and said what up with that? his arrow is barely visible. Either way, the trailer looked VERY ood, so we'll see.

The chubby kid that plays Aang looks like he's 7 or something in the second picture... Sigh.

I guess they censored Zuko's scar because it's a kids movie?

Ok... I'm absolutely sick of people making the casting of this movie a race issue. I realize that the overall look and feel of Avatar has a dominant asian theme, but the story doesn't seem to take place in what we would like to consider "this world". It's fantasy that borrows heavily from real world cultures. There are no real fire nations, no water tribes or airbenders to speak of, so please... let's just get over it already. All we should really care about is that the director stays true to the feel of the series, and from what I've heard in interviews... he is.
I recommend watching the interview with M. Knight on the bonus disc of the second season DVD collection. It actually put to rest a few of the concerns I had. It might do the same for all of you.
...With that in mind...
- Yes, I agree Zuko's scar doesn't thrill me, but I'm sure the censors didn't want something that would scare kids too much... but it's not enough. He need to be more menacing.
- Aang doesn't look too young. He was probably right around the right age at the time of filming and I'm happy about that. I hate when older actors play younger characters...
I've got a good feeling about this one... I hope we're not disappointed.

Hey, I'm white and I think white people are great! But my understanding is this world is based on Asian mythology and Asian culture - the characters in the animated version are clearly Asian, as they should be in such a world. Yeah, in the animated version there are some peripherary characters that seem caucaisian, which is fine, but casting white people for the main characters seems just stupid. If I was an Eskimo I would be lit up! Prince Zuko is clearly from one of the dominant races in the Avatar world, and as such should be played by someone of Chinese or perhaps Korean background.

The bottom line is, there was good reason the cast of LOTR was all white (story based on European mythology), and likewise the main characters of Last Air Bender should be all (or mostly) Asian. Not racism, just common sense.
